Dividend Income Update March

As compared to the rough start to 2016, March was certainly a positive month for investors. The major indices I track most often are all up from February 29 to March 29: (S&P +5.5%, NASDAQ +2.57%, TSX +2.32%). I must say it has been nice to see more of my portfolio in the green this month.

Several of my stocks paid dividends this month and my March dividend income alone has over doubled my 2016 total to $24.17. It never gets old saying this, I hit a new monthly record in March due to the number of my holdings paying dividends this month. I’m sure this number will continue to fluctuate until I have more holdings as some months are more stacked than others.

March Dividends Received

EMR $4.28
JNJ $2.25
ENB $1.59
XOM $4.84
CNR $1.88 (to be paid on March 31)

Total: $14.84

It is very encouraging to see the money I have invested in equities generating some passive income. The holdings in my Niche Fund pay quarterly dividends so some months will have more income reflected than others. My Dividend Income page has a calendar showing when I expect to receive dividends from each of my holdings.

My DGI journey began in July 2015 and is off to a modest start. I aim to save a portion of my income and devote it towards regular dividend stock purchases. I have a number of large purchases coming up in 2016 so the amounts for my purchases will be lower than what I plan on investing in future years. I recently added a position in BNS which is my third financial holding and third Canadian bank stock.

It is truly addicting to find the best possible companies each month and determine whether they meet my investment criteria. Of course the start of any long journey is slow going. I appreciate you taking time to stop by and look forward to chatting more with fellow DGI investors on their strategies and objectives.

If you’re new to my site, my plan is to buy and hold high-quality dividend paying stocks in order to enjoy the flexibility offered by the passive income stream generated by regular dividend payments to shareholders. In the long run, these dividends will start to grow on their own through dividend hikes. I look forward to posting the next dividend income update at the end of April.

Did you have a solid month for dividend income in March? Any plans on adding to your financial sector holdings in 2016, more specifically the Canadian banks? Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Congrats on setting a new record for monthly income. I did likewise this month, passing into two figures for the first time. I’m with you on BNS. I’m looking to fill out my position in the next month or so.

  2. It sure feels good to break monthly records. There’s no secret formula to becoming financially independent with dividends. It just takes, time, persistence, and a little luck. I set a new record this March as well. Congrats on a great month.

  3. Great month Niche! You haven’t been at it for even a year and you are setting records. I love how you are addicted to the gave a mere 9 months into your dividend investing career. To me, this is the best addiction you can have. With your attitude and mentality, you will be able to accomplish some great things along this journey. And it will happen much soon than you ever anticipated. Keep up the great work and make sure to build off of your successes this March!
